Rise Above the Pandemic

leadership transition Mar 24, 2021

-By Jane Halford

March 2021 marks the one-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic being declared. As I have reflected on this milestone, I have considered who I have become in the past 12 months and what, if anything, I need to adjust going forward.

If any of us really knew a year ago the impact on our personal freedom, financial instability, and society we would have said "I can't do that". But, we have and we continue to press on through this extended pandemic. Who I became in this year was more independent. When there's only you in your house (except for the dog), you realize that your emotional and mental highs and lows are present throughout the day...every day...whatever day it may be today.

Who have you become during the pandemic?

My coping skills with isolation became familiar. Most days it was effective, and I sustained a level of acceptance of the reality of being physically separate from my friends, family, and life as I knew it. In survival times, stabilizing my ability to function each day was welcome. It was the certainty that helped me feel secure.

What coping skills did you develop in 2020?

What I recognize now is that if I continue in this mental model of surviving in separation, the long-term impacts will be devastating to me. I picture what this looks like if I continue this mindset another 6, 12 or 24 months. I will fall into poor heath and depression. Seeing that now means I can change the direction before it happens.

Who will you become if you continue in a survival mindset?

So, what am I doing to rise above the pandemic (even if it's not over)? First, I am setting goals for 2021 that can be achieved even if pandemic restrictions are not lifted. They are personal and professional goals that I can achieve from right here in my house. Next, I am committing to scheduling online or telephone connections with my friends and, when possible, I will walk with them outside. Finally, I am surrounding myself with inspiring and uplifting voices through online courses, virtual communities, e-books, and podcasts focused on forward-looking topics.

How will you rise above the pandemic?

There is no perfect solution - not for me and not for you - but I will continue to monitor my wellbeing and adjust my support structure to keep me rising not falling. Who do I want to become in 2021? The strong, caring, and contributing person that I am meant to be.

Who do you want to become in 2021?
